Affordable Plain White Styrofoam Ceiling tiles add sound dampening, insulation, and feature beautifully embossed 3-D designs that can be painted to complement any decor. They are 1/4″ x 20″ x 20″ and weigh about 1 oz. Styrofoam tiles are installed with an adhesive, and our preferred type is Acryl-Pro’s Ceramic Tile Adhesive. Do not nail or staple Styrofoam tiles. Use a razor knife or scissors to cut them, and for best results, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, all seams between tiles should be caulked. For a stylish finish, add crown molding along the edges at the walls. Styrofoam ceiling tiles can not only be installed on typical drywall, plywood or plaster surfaces, but also to cover popcorn ceilings, though if the “popcorn” is not stable and easily comes off on your fingers, it must first be removed. (Caution: Before removing popcorn ceiling material, you should test for asbestos. If asbestos is present, have it removed by a professional.) Use water-based paint to add color to your plain white styrofoam ceiling tiles, but never use spray paint, which can dissolve your tiles. Your tiles can be painted before installation, or after they have been installed and the caulking has fully dried.
